How have you used the snap shot tool in Newforma?

The more I speak with customers the more unique ways I find them using our snapshot feature. This is the camera icon in the bottom right of your screen next to the Newforma Search box. In fact, I used the snapshot tool to take a snapshot of the snapshot so I could attach it to this topic (wow, that actually makes sense if you read it enough).

One person told me they used it to capture screen shots of various websites that they inserted into a powerpoint presentation. I myself use it to put together HowTo documents for my customers; a picture is worth a thousand words. In this case I also use a Newforma markup session so I can add text and arrows to help make my points more clear.

So the question to you my fellow Newformants is, how have you leveraged this feature?

Thank you,
Dan

I have used it many times. It is so much easier than going thru the procees of a print sreen.

Hi Dan,

I love the snapshot tool - especially now that it is remote to a session. We use it in a lot of ways - the only ones that might be unique though are using it with basic graphics created in sketch-up for creating documents and presentation material, and capturing network folder / drive information for users.

Thanks,
Dean

I think that while a screenshot tool is a necessary part of the windows desktop, the Newforma implementation is a little buggy.  I would like a few more options regarding the capture settings(entire window, rectangle, selected app), the ability to drop into Paint/Office/Image Editor of choice…

Also it seems to be a little slow to take the screenshot, and then load the markup tool.  I can press printscreen, open paint and paste it in before the Newforma markup tool has even loaded.  I have used several screenshot tools(Lightscreen, HardCopy, etc), and Newforma is just too slow compared to the others.

Also when taking a printscreen the Newforma tool can only capture the active video layer, meaning that it misses certain rendered items in 3D cad and help overlays in word and excel.

This is running on a Q6600, 4GB DDR800, and a 8800GTX, so it’s not the machine.

Maybe this post should be moved to the Product Suggestions?

i remember seeing that search image in my system tray one of the first times that i logged into Project Center, but now it’s not there anymore.  How does one turn it on or off?

Right Click on your start bar and goto Toolbars.  Once it expands you can select “Newforma Project Search 4.0”.  See the attached image for detail.

thanks.

come to think about it… i may have un-checked it from the Toolbars list days ago… ‘cause it was takin’ up so much real estate in the bar.

how about if it was just the little camera, and it sat inside the system tray instead?

is there maybe an additional way of invoking the Snapshot feature?  ...i’ve used SnagIt for years, and have had a hotkey to take the picture.

If you have build 4.0.1882 or later you can launch the snapshot tool by running the viewer with a command line argument. We did this because we had some challenges getting the 4.0 search bar to deploy on 64 bit systems. (This was fixed in 5th edition.)

Here’s a link to a help page that gives the details on how to setup a shortcut to do this:

Create a Snapshot Tool Shortcut

To see which version of Project Center you have in 4th Edition click on the Project Center icon on the very top left corner of the window next to the Caption and choose the last item - “About…” (In 5th Edition, the Help button has a dropdown arrow next to it and the About dialog can be accessed there.)
Hope that helps,
-Chad

thanks… i created the shortcut and it works fine as a Quick launch item (using 4.0.1977.0, non 64bit)

...but, SnapShot (Viewer.exe) only operates on my laptop (primary) screen, and my Project Center happens to be running on my larger (extended desktop) flat panel.

SnagIt works on any screen/monitor your mouse can point to.

We are aware of the dual monitor problem. Hopefully, we can get a fix for that into 5th edition.
Thanks,
Chad

Update - I just submitted a fix for the dual monitor issue. Assuming that this fix will pass our QA process, 5th Edition will support extended desktops.
Thanks for posting,
Chad

Chad - will this fix also include ‘Windows position memory’ across dual screens?

No, this fix is specific to the screen capture feature. What’s the problem with the ‘Windows Position Memory?’ Are windows coming up off the screen if they were last left open on the other monitor?
Thanks,
Chad

correct.

in my case, NPC always opens on my laptop (primary) monitor, even tho i’ve attempted to open it on my larger (secondary) flat panel by closing it down from there.  (i.e. NPC don’t remember the last position it was at)

I just reproduced these problems. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. We’ll definitely get this fixed in 5th edition as well.

On my laptop with dual monitors I can still do snapshots only on the laptop screen, and when I’m on the road, Newforma windows persistently pop up off-screen.

I’m on 5.0.2373. Is there a fix I need to install? Thanks.
