Deploying Fifth Edition via Active Directory

Newforma has made some significant efforts for Fifth Edition to make deploying Newforma Project Center (client) to your user’s desktop via Active Directory as simple and robust as possible.

The method that has been used in the past has changed and we do not recommend you extract an .MSI from the “NewformaProjectCenterSetup.exe”, as the pre-requisites (Visual Studio Tools, Primary Interoperability Assemblies, and Visual C++ components) which are part of the .EXE, are not bundled as part of the .MSI and would need to be deployed separately, significantly complicating the deployment process.

Rather, we are recommending that the .EXE remain intact and placed on a network share to be called by a .BAT file which is pushed by the Active Directory process to your user’s machines and set to run on start-up.

The details of this process are fully documented in the following files which are included in the Installation and Upgrade deployment transmittals:

If you are considering push deploy methods or have had difficulty with deploying .MSI files using Active Directory in the past, this document is worth a look.

As always, if you have questions, feel free to contact Newforma Support.

Hi Steve.  Is it that Newforma does not recommend using MSI’s or does not support using MSI’s?  Is there further explanation of these difficulties with MSI’s & Newforma?  MSI’s have always been my preference and I would like to understand the situation a bit more, being a new client.  Without knowing any of the prior history of Newforma & MSI’s, I very much look forward to seeing Newforma support MSI’s in the future.

For the unlearned such as myself it would be nice if the said documentation included steps on how to uninstall via Active Directory.  Perhaps I’m an ignoramus (which is a serious possibility!) but the uninstall flags I’m trying are not giving preferable results and if it’s said how to install something it should be said how to uninstall likewise.

Thank you.

I know this post is old, but can anyone help me with a silent install of the version 7 client?  I currently have version 6 installed and want to deploy the upgraded client via Group Policy.  Has anyone done this via a batch file etc.. (considering that the installer isn’t an MSI) what strings are required for a silent install?  I used \\filepath\NewformaProjectCenterSetup.exe /S/v/qn, but this didn’t install quietly or without interaction from me.
